Hi All,
I read in the news that more than 8000 seats are still lying vacant despite the 2nd extensive rounds of counseling. With this as the status quo i keep wondering some times why the regulatory bodies are still sanctioning new engineering colleges esp in Tamilnadu.
may be its time we focus on the existing ones and ensure that these have relevant and sufficient infrastructure in place and that coaching and assessment levels are up to the mark. In short we should be aspiring to make every engineering college in our country to the level of IITs

Quite correct.
If you had noticed, in our batch, students were thronging to get into a private university. So much so, that a Marine @ IIT or Procees @ NIT was not enough to lure them. Albeit, there were those who migrated to Anna Univ (however delayed the commencement was)
It's just that students are looking at a brand name. VIT, SASTRA, Amrita are 'brands'... Though they are a couple of notches below the IITs...
Rather than introducing more Universities to confuse the masses, the existing ones should be upgraded. It is heartening to see an IIT campus coming up in Gandhinagar. It is one of another handful.
Making all the colleges on par with the IITs is a Herculean ask, but it is possible. With efficient management of funds and resources, we can realise this dream.
